Invest smartly with us

Fortum’s whitepaper “Crystal Balls & Hockey Sticks: Making sense of the future Nordic energy market” was an interesting read. It summarizes the key points of many discussions that we have had with our customers and partners recently and helps position Aurora Infrastructure in the changing electricity market landscape. We have a role to play in innovating and financing solutions that are needed to meet the changing needs resulting from volatile production and increasing demand.

Already today, 15 % of Finnish industrial electricity consumption runs through infrastructure operated by us. We are looking forward to growing that number by ensuring that industrial electrification advances, and by developing solutions that frees up financial and human resources for our customers.

Volatile production

During the past years the amount of renewables, namely wind and solar, has created a new normal – a highly volatile the production that is dependent on the weather. Hence, volatility is the new norm. The market looks different hour by hour, or every 15 minutes. Quoting the whitepaper and Fortum blog: “Volatility is here to stay, but it doesn’t have to be a problem.” We agree. Being prepared for volatility is about managing risk and reward. It is about building flexibility and storage solutions or shifting demand to the lower priced hours.

Increasing demand

Electricity demand has been almost flat during the past decades. Today, the market is different. The electricity demand is foreseen to grow rapidly, driven by the need to decarbonize industrial processes. According to Fingrid, the demand will grow from current 83 TWh to 103-123 TWh by 2035. To stay competitive, production will need to follow suit.

The existing industry processes are only a part of the increasing demand. In addition, there are entirely new industrial processes emerging in the Nordics and globally: Hydrogen and P2X plants as well as datacenters all push the electricity consumption up. These are not small, flexible loads. They are large and capital-intensive investments and typically prefer steady load for optimized production.

Window of opportunity is closing?

Concerns about electricity supply are rising because of volatile production and increasing demand. The problem is real. But so are the solutions. Hence, it is important to note that the window of opportunity in the Nordics is now or never. If the Nordic countries fail to capture their fair share of investments in the industry electrification, we may see the investments materialising elsewhere. We need to act, and we need to act fast.

Investing smartly

Scaling the next phase of the Nordic energy system requires capital. And capital requires confidence. Aurora Infrastructure’s way of working can help reduce risks and ensure that the electrification of industry processes is done in a controlled manner, including the needed balancing power, flexibility and storage solutions.

Aurora Infrastructure combine financing with the ability to innovate the best possible solutions and then convert them into plans and actions. We can help in securing financing for capital-intensive projects by with foresight, experience and ability to execute.
