Datacentres: Flexibility and resilience

The rising demand for datacentres is forecasted to increase electricity consumption by 20% globally during the coming years. Considering the electricity price and availability, we need to ensure that data centres are considered in the broader economic and societal points of view and well-integrated in the energy system.

Nokia’s new campus in Oulu is a showcase of such integration. Energy efficient buildings and datacentre that serve R&D and are integrated in the energy system both in terms of electricity and heat are excellent examples of how we at Aurora Infrastructure can help our customers focus on their core business, free up CAPEX and enable new revenue flows – and be an integral part of the energy infrastructure.

Data enables sovereignty and competitiveness

European sovereignty is a hot topic. In the context of data, there are rising concerns related to international tech giants and their role in the society. Yet at the same time, data is driving productivity and innovation across industries. To stay competitive, we simply cannot afford to miss out on the development related to data and AI. Hence, collaboration between different actors is needed to ensure that we don’t just focus on the risks but also see the opportunities.

Datacentres are a part of the energy system

Data industry’s interest towards Finland is in the rise. According to the Finnish Industries the planned data centre investments grew by 12 BEUR in 2025 to over 20 BEUR. While there is a risk that electricity consumption may increase electricity price, there is also an opportunity to use data centres as a flexibility and resilience assets. When integrated with district heating, data centres can also support emission reduction targets.

As optimists who change the world, we at Aurora Infrastructure believe that by working together we can find solutions that ensure positive economic, societal and environmental impact.
