Partnering to speed up electrification
Part 3 of 3: Meeting the hydrogen mandates in time
Nordic position in the green hydrogen race is enviable: abundant renewable power, biogenic CO₂ from forest industry, strong grids, cool climate, and industrial sites with room to grow. What we are lacking today, are final investment decisions.
Speeding up execution
While the green hydrogen industry is moving forward, there is a need to speed up execution. Working together with Aurora Infrastructure offers benefits for new and existing sites alike:
- For new sites, we take responsibility for the electrical scope the project developer can focus on their core business. The benefit? A bankable, fixed-cost electrical backbone that limits developer’s capital for the process plant. Our memorandum of understanding with Norsk e-Fuel on their Rauma e-fuel project for example follows this pattern: the infrastructure partnership is agreed early.
- For existing industrial sites, we offer the reverse model: When a partner sells us the electrical assets they already own, it free up capital, and enables new investments by redeploying it into the core business.
Europe’s green hydrogen market is no longer waiting for demand to appear. The Nordic Ren-Gas billion EUR offtake deal shows that demand for e-methane and green fuels will be real for 2030. To capture that, the project developers need to act now.
The window of opportunity is closing
In Finland, the hydrogen pipeline is real and moving: There are several e-methane projects with offtakes signed, e-methanol and e-SAF plants with permits in place. The winners of this decade will be the handful that reach final investment decision in the next couple of years — and every one of them needs 110kv or 400 kv of connection capacity built in time.
In Sweden, electrification is rewriting heavy industry — green steel, e-fuels, battery value chains — and green hydrogen sits at the centre of it. The same logic applies on both sides of the Gulf of Bothnia: mandates set the deadline, infrastructure sets the pace.
Partnering to meet the mandates
Aurora Infrastructures customers Neste, Outokumpu, Nokia and Terrafame show that partnering with us adds value for their core business. Our focus is in the Nordics, and we invest where our customers grow. We are looking at doubling our portfolio by 2030 – and believe that green hydrogen is part of that growth.
The 2030 mandates will be met by somebody. The premium will be captured by the projects that are on time. If you think your green hydrogen project could move faster with the electrical infrastructure designed, financed, built, owned and operated by a partner who does nothing else — let’s talk.
