Aurora initiates a substantial upgrade investment into the on-site electricity network serving Outokumpu Tornio works. Siemens Energy Oy has been appointed as the main contractor. The value of the entire project including associated building works is approximately 7 MEUR.
Over the course of 2021-2022 a High-Voltage substation will be constructed and equipped with a new gas insulated (GIS) switchgear. Also some of the 110kV incoming connection lines serving the site will be re-routed to the new switchgear by 2024.
“Our goal is to further improve on-site network availability as well as the serviceability of equipment during normal operations in order to ensure the pre-requisites, on Aurora’s behalf, are fulfilled for competitive and low-carbon stainless steel production in Tornio far into the future”, says Aurora Tornio Site Manager Pentti Alatalo.
“Improvement of on-site electricity network reliability for the Tornio plant is of high importance to Outokumpu. We are also pleased with the good cooperation with Aurora during the project planning phase,” says Carsten Poch-Schäfer, High Voltage Manager from Outokumpu
During these challenging times we expect the project to employ a significant amount of local service providers and we believe this to be indeed very positive regarding the future. The project namely also takes into account our customer’s future development plans and associated network development needs.
